Skilled Nursing Care Isn’t Optional

I grew up watching my mother care for aging adults and their families with deep compassion. As a gerontologist and care manager, she dedicated her life to helping older adults and their families find the right support, no matter how complex the situation.

My mother’s joy came from finding solutions that improved quality of life for seniors and their families. Sometimes that meant building a loving home care team, and sometimes it meant finding quality care at a nursing home that gave both the older adult and their family peace. There was no shame or stigma in needing help, only love in finding the right kind.

A Workforce Cliff for Nursing Homes

New Jersey’s nursing homes face a looming crisis beyond budgets or buildings—it’s about people. Specifically, it’s about a growing gap where more and more seniors need care, and fewer caregivers are available to support them. This growing imbalance is known as the “workforce cliff.”

New Jersey’s Seniors Can’t Afford More Medicaid Cuts

The aging of our population is no secret, but many don’t consider how the funding we invest today determines the future of care.  Within five years, all baby boomers will be age 65 or older, and the population of people aged 80 and over in New Jersey is projected to grow by 44% in the next decade.

This demographic trend inevitably means that New Jersey’s nursing homes will be more important than ever in providing quality health care to our state’s most vulnerable residents.

Michael’s Story: Recovery, Care, and Compassion After a Stroke

In January 2023, Michael’s world changed in an instant. A stroke left him unconscious and motionless — “totally dormant, dead,” as he put it. After emergency brain surgery, he awoke not only to a new reality, but to a daunting question: what happens now?

That question was answered at Kresson View Complete Care at Voorhees, a long-term care facility in South Jersey, where Michael was admitted for rehabilitation. Micheal remembers thinking, “I’m going to be this way for the rest of my life.” But, the compassion and dedication of the Kresson View team began to reshape that belief.

Michael doesn’t sugarcoat his journey. Rehabilitation can be hard, and recovery can be frustrating. But he knows he’s in the right place to make his journey to recovery as smooth as possible.

Linda Mary’s Story: From Wheelchair to Walking Again

When Linda Mary arrived at Complete Care Shorrock Gardens, a long-term care facility in Brick, New Jersey, she couldn’t walk or sit up in bed.

“I came here, and I was completely dependent,” Linda Mary recalls. “I’m a very prideful woman, and I wouldn’t let them put a diaper on me. I told them, ‘I can roll over and use a bedpan,’ and they respected that. They accommodated me. They treated me with dignity.”

But over the course of eight months, Linda Mary went from being bedridden to standing, walking, showering independently, and living with confidence again.

Antoinette’s Story: Being Away from Home Doesn’t Mean Being Alone

When Antoinette arrived at her short-term rehabilitation stay after a hospitalization, she was leaving the life she’d known—her home, her husband—and preparing to transition into an assisted living facility. The emotional weight of that shift was overwhelming.

“I’m going to cry,” Antoinette said, reflecting on those early days. “Leaving my house, wanting my husband.”

Being away from home is never easy, especially when home is no longer the best or safest place. That’s where people like Tonya, a Resident Concierge at Complete Care in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, come in.

Jeffrey & Hilda’s Story: Quality Long-Term Care Means Peace of Mind

After suffering a stroke, Jeffrey’s father began physical and occupational therapy and showed some early signs of recovery. But over time, progress slowed.

“My dad had the stroke and was doing rehab and seemed to be progressing,” Jeffrey recalled. “Then it felt like he kind of stopped trying as much. Slowly, things progressed to the point where he couldn’t move his right side anymore.”

The family did everything they could to care for him at home. But it became clear that even around-the-clock help wasn’t enough for a loved one who could no longer care for himself and was living with dementia.

David’s Story: Healing with Heart and Love

David didn’t expect his world to change overnight, but that’s exactly what happened.

“I woke up one morning, and all of a sudden, I was letting my son know that I didn’t feel good,” he recalled. “I went down to the hospital down the street, and I found out that I had pneumonia.”

But pneumonia was just the beginning. His condition worsened. He grew weaker. “It developed into more serious things than that,” David said. “I was bedridden for a while, and it really stiffened me up.”

That’s when he came to Complete Care at Arbors in Toms River — and found more than just a place to recover. He found people who treated him like family.

Celebrating a Century: Cecilia’s Story

When Cecilia turned 100, she didn’t just celebrate a milestone—she started a new chapter.

“It’s quite a gift to live to be a hundred,” she said with a smile. “And I’m starting the second century.”

To mark the occasion, the staff at Complete Care Arbors in Toms River, New Jersey, where Cecilia is a resident, pulled out all the stops. They organized a joyful birthday party filled with music, laughter, and love. There was a beautiful cake, visits from friends and family—and even a special guest: a pony.

“The whole day was beautiful. Everyone was there,” Cecilia said. “Hundreds of people at my birthday party. It was kind of special.”
